Hair dyeing at home holds numerous benefits, and now there are some amazing DIY options out there that will give you salon quality locks without leaving the front door. One of the biggest challenges, however, is that the colour can often stain your forehead, neck, ears or hands if you’re not careful and it can be the worst feeling when you wash out your dye and find dark patches across your most visible parts of skin. But worry not, there’s ways around it – five to be precise.
How to get hair dye off your skin
Olive oil
Olive oil is a natural cleanser that could help remove stains from your skin, an especially good option for people with sensitive skin.
Just pour a small amount of olive oil, it doesn’t matter which kind, onto your clean finger or a cotton ball and gently rub into the stained area of your skin.
Leave for up to eight hours, or overnight if you’ve done a dye job in the evening.
But if you’re going to sleep with it on, you may want to cover it so it doesn’t stain your bedding.
To remove the oil, just wash off with warm water.
Rubbing alcohol
Rubbing alcohol can be harsh and dry out the skin, so if you’ve got sensitive skin this isn’t one for you.
To use as a dye remove, just pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a cotton ball or pad.
Gently dab it onto the stained parts of the skin.
Once the dye is off, be sure to rinse the area with warm water and soap.
Toothpaste
Toothpaste can help get rid of stains on your teeth, but it’s also great for removing hair dye from skin.
Use a non-gel toothpaste and apply a small amount onto a cotton bud or your fingertip.
Gently massage it over the dyed parts of the skin you’re trying to clean.
Leave for five or 10 minutes and then remove with a flannel or towel soaked in warm water.

Washing up liquid and baking soda
Washing up liquid and baking soda is best used for getting hair dye stains off your hands.
Bicarbonate of soda is an exfoliant and washing up liquid can work to dissolve the dye.
To use, combine gentle dish liquid and baking soda to form a paste and gently rub over the affected areas.
As with the prior methods, rinse with warm water when you want to remove.
Moisturiser or petroleum jelly
This method is a preventative one, but it will save your life during future dye jobs.
Apply a barrier of petroleum jelly or moisturiser between your hairline and face before applying the dye.
Wipe up any spills as you go by using a damp cotton swab or pad, as removing the stain right away will prevent it from sticking to the skin.
