CARDIGANS often get a bad reputation for being frumpy, "mumsy" and more suited to your gran.

But, ever since Katie Holmes stepped out in a £1,260 cashmere cardigan with matching bra ever so slightly on show, the humble cardie has become a major fashion symbol and now, fashion fans are labelling it "the sexigan".

The new trend isn't difficult to achieve – in fact, the woolly staple hasn't changed at all, it's merely about how you wear it – and what with.

When 40-year-old Katie stepped out in the grey number by Khaite, she wore it slightly off the shoulder, with top button undone to flash a glimpse of underwear.

Teamed with sunnies, blue denim jeans and black mules, the actress oozed cool.

And it seems the "sexigan" trend has flourished ever since, with The Sunday Times reporting that searches for the actress' style reportedly trebled the week she wore it.

But Katie isn't alone, with other fashion faces including Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Kaia Gerber also copying the simple but sexy look.

Bella Hadid has been spotted wearing a number of "sexigans" over the years and often wears them braless, fastened with just one button to expose a glimpse of toned midriff.

In one image, she's also achieved the "underboob" trend by pairing a mustard cardigan with high-waisted jeans and no bra.

Model Kaia Gerber is also a fan, fastening her knitted number with a single button and teaming with jeans for (literally) the off-duty model look.

Other fans include Bella's sister Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen as well as Emily Ratajkowski, Rihanna and Keira Knightley.

The good news is it's the perfect season to achieve the "sexigan".

From designer labels to high-street giants such as Topshop, Zara and Mango, retailers are tapping into the trend with copycat versions of Katie's cardie.

But if you don't want to splash out, the look can be achieved with one hanging in your wardrobe.

Pair with blue denim jeans, a waist-cinching belt and a (decent, remember it will be partly on show) bralet.
