H.E.R.’s Grammys Jumpsuit Is a Tribute to Aretha Franklin
H.E.R. continued her tradition of sartorially honoring music icons at the 2022 Grammys. The “Slide” singer walked the red carpet wearing a kaftan jumpsuit inspired by Aretha Franklin’s dress at the 1976 American Music Awards. Custom-made by Dundas, the jumpsuit was made of yellow and orange ombré chiffon and featured sheer, floor-grazing sleeves. The front was embellished top to bottom with gold beads and sequins, arranged to resemble a giant phoenix. She completed the look with sparkly platform sandals, round orange-tinted sunglasses, and a simple silver diamond necklace.
Wouri Vice, H.E.R.’s longtime stylist, teased the artist’s Grammys look ahead of the award show, telling POPSUGAR, “This Grammys look is one of those moments where you’re like, OK, she’s evolving. She’s doing a thing, and we see it.” On being influenced by Franklin while piecing together the look, he added, “We came back to someone we’ve worked with before, and what’s been created is absolutely beautiful. She’s going to definitely stand out on the red carpet based on color alone. She always looks like walking sunshine, so it’s guaranteed to bring joy.”
H.E.R. has become quite fond of paying tribute to music legends on the red carpet. The star’s 2021 Oscars look, a purple caped jumpsuit also custom-designed by Dundas, was a nod to Prince’s style, while her sequin suit at the 2021 iHeartRadio Music Awards was inspired by Elton John.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting night for H.E.R., who’s nominated in eight Grammy categories, including song of the year for “Fight for You.” She’s also set to take the stage for a performance during the award show. Ahead, take a closer look at her intricate red carpet jumpsuit and the Franklin outfit that inspired it.
