The pair shared a kiss before Vernon approached the microphone and said: “I think it’s the right time for me to say this. It’s been three years that I’ve been going out with the missus and, erm, Tess, will you…”

Boy George then walked Tess back onto the stage as the crowd erupted into cheers, with the confused-looking presenter mouthing: “He’s not going to.”

“When you leave the house just put the dishwasher on.”

Thankfully, Tess saw the funny side and playfully stormed off the stage.

Just five months later, Vernon proposed for real at Tess’s parents’ house on Christmas Day.

He opened up about the special moment during his time on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020, telling his campmates: “I think [one of my happiest memories] was when I proposed to Tess. On Christmas Day it was, it was the last present under the tree.

“While she was so consumed by the ring, I was on one knee. She was like that [pulls shocked face]. It was awesome.”

The presenter later added in the Bush Telegraph: “When she opened it up, her face just lit up!”

Vernon and Tess got married the following September at St Mary’s Church in Horwich – Vernon’s hometown. The newlyweds then travelled to their reception at Rivington Hall Barn in a VW camper van with the words “Just Married” painted across the back window.

Shortly after tying the knot, Tess became pregnant with their first child and they welcomed daughter Phoebe in October 2004.

Their second daughter, Amber, was born five years later in May 2009.

It comes as Vernon took part in his ULTRA Ultramarathon Challenge for BBC Children In Need.

He took on marathons and ultramarathons across four days to get him from Victoria Park, Leicester, to Bolton Wanderers’ football stadium.

Children In Need 2023 will air on BBC One tonight at 7pm.
