Sir Tom Jones, 80, has admitted he ignored a doctor’s warning after they told him to “slow down” amid a battle with a bacterial infection back in 2018. The Voice UK 2021 coach did not agree with medical advice to rest up after being treated for a serious condition in hospital.
There’s nothing wrong with my voice!

Instead, the rock star was determined to get back to performing, as he did not want to “let people down”.
Speaking with Jen Long on her podcast, Talk The Line, behind the inspiration for his new album Surrounded By Time, Tom shared it came as a result of recovering from illness.
Jen said: “Part of this album was a reaction to coming out of hospital and a doctor telling you [Tom] to slow down, and you were like, ’Nah’.”
Tom agreed: “Exactly, I had an infection, and he said, ‘Ah well, you know.’ I said, ‘I’ve got shows to do! And there’s nothing wrong with my voice’.”
However, despite his protestations, the doctors still thought Tom was not well enough to carry on performing due to his older age which could slow his recovery time.
Relaying the doctor’s response to him voicing his opinion on feeling better and wanting to return to work, Tom said: “‘Ah well you know at your age.’ I think I was 78 then, ‘What are you worried about now? You shouldn’t be worrying about it’.”
However, the main reason for the singer’s determination to recover quickly was so he could entertain his loyal audiences, who had spent their hard-earned cash on tickets to his concerts.
He added: “I don’t want to let people down! I’ve got shows to do. So he tried to tell me to, ’Slow down’ but I don’t want to slow down!”
Tom admitted that despite most of his fans being “fine” with him returning to the stage some did express their worries for him.
“People were concerned, they thought there was something wrong, but it was an infection I had,” he finished.
Tom was forced to pull out of a series of concerts back in 2018 due to the unspecified illness.
On his Twitter account, one statement read: “It is with regret that we have to cancel Tom Jones’s performance at Down By The Laituri, Turku, Finland on Wednesday 25th July.
“Sir Tom Jones is recovering well from his recent illness, however will not be fit enough to perform on Wednesday.
“He is extremely sorry and disappointed not to be able to perform, and sincerely apologises for inconveniences caused to the audience and all those who are involved in the event.”

The then 78-year-old also cancelled his concerts in Chester, Leicester and Stansted.
His reps confirmed he was suffering from a “bacterial condition” which meant he would need to remain in the hospital for treatment.
They typed: “Sir Tom has a bacterial infection for which he is being treated in hospital.
“The condition is being well managed and under doctors’ orders, appropriate recovery time and rest is advised.”
Since then Tom has thankfully made a full recovery and has focused on his role as a coach on The Voice UK.
He admitted to feeling guilty after he rejected one of the contestants in the first episode of this series.
He shared in a Q&A with his fellow judges Olly Murs, Anne Marie and will.i.am: “Yes… The fella was so good as well, I did say it, he didn’t do anything wrong… it’s just something to take him over the top. What that is I don’t know but I didn’t hear it.
“But listening to him again, we only get one shot at it! You hear it once and there’s no time to review it, you can’t think, ‘Let me think about that’, you either do it or they’re gone. And that’s what happened when I saw that singer, just listening to him sing and I thought, ‘Why the hell didn’t you press the button,’ and I shouted in the thing, ‘Press the button you mug!'”
