The Weeknd has reverted to using his birth name on social media after recently revealing his intention to “kill” his alter ego.
Last week, the Canadian hip-hop superstar suggested that his next album will be his last under the moniker The Weeknd.
The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, began releasing music under the name in 2011 with his debut mixtape, House Of Balloons.
In a new interview with W magazine, the “Blinding Lights” singer suggested his next album could be his last released under the name.
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” Tesfaye told W. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
He added, “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
On Monday, the Weeknd’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were updated to display his birth name rather than his artistic name.
