You don’t hear too much from Sarah Michelle Gellar anymore. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress was on a hot streak in the ’90s, appearing in all kinds of films and other productions. But nowadays, she spends much of her time with her family and working on smaller projects.
However, she recently emerged and gave a wide-ranging interview in which she revealed her celebrity crush — who, by the way, is not her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr.
Sarah Michelle Gellar’s celebrity crush revealed
Often times when married celebrities are asked to name their celebrity crush, they’ll play coy and say their spouse — but not Gellar. The Scooby Doo actress freely shared hers in an interview with Us Weekly published on March 13.
“John Kennedy Jr. was my celebrity crush,” she confessed. “Wait, am I supposed to say Freddie?”
That would probably be the “normal” thing to do. But in Gellar’s defense, many people had crushes on him.
Kennedy, the son of the late President John F. Kennedy, was famous for his chiseled movie-star looks and natural charm. People magazine even named him the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1988, making him the first non-entertainer to ever earn the title. Kennedy was widely considered an international sex symbol before his death in a plane crash in July 1999.
Sarah Michelle Gellar met Freddie Prinze Jr. a few years earlier
The actors met on the set of the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer. Three years later, they went on their first date, which happened in a roundabout way.
“We had made plans for dinner with a mutual friend and the person canceled,” Gellar once told People. “We decided to have dinner anyway and never looked back.”
The pair got engaged in April 2001 and married in September 2002 in a lavish beachside ceremony in Mexico.
Gellar and Prinze went on to have two children: Charlotte and Rocky.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are still going strong
In an industry where marriages have the shelf life of a banana, these actors have managed to make it work. In January, Gellar and Prinze even celebrated the 20th anniversary of their first date.
Gellar told People in a 2016 interview that the secret to a successful relationship is quality time.
“Take the 10 minutes – put the phone down. Have a cup of coffee together. Walk the dog at the end of the night. Read a story with your kids,” she explained. “Make the most of the time that you have.”
Meanwhile, Prinze attributed their longlasting relationship to the foundation they built early on.
“We were just friends for a good two years before we ever went on a date,” he told E! News in 2017. “She knew what kind of guy I was. She knew what my morals were, what my priorities were and visa versa. We already kind of knew all the faults in the other person.”
“We ended up being the perfect balance,” Prinze added. “But it didn’t happen until years after and there was a solid foundation built, and that’s probably the main reason why we’ve always been cool and groovy.”
Aww! What a perfect match.
