Sir Rod Stewart’s wife Penny Lancaster recently hit the headlines after she candidly revealed her struggles during the coronavirus lockdown. She admitted the difficulties between herself and the ‘Maggie May’ crooner while confined together had worsened since she started the menopause. During the interview, she also claimed that the singer previously feared he had lost her after she appeared on BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and had to contain his “jealousy”. Penny is the third wife of the rock and roll legend, who has had a number of public battles with exes over the decades. They included spats with first wife Alana Stewart who admitted that she would never have dated Rod if she had known about his sordid antics in the past. During a bombshell interview with her husband, who sat right beside her, she candidly confessed her disapproval of his previous lifestyle.
Alana Stewart delivered a number of harsh truths to the singer, where she decried his promiscuity, drug abuse and the unflattering perception others had of him.
Flabbergasted Rod watched in shock as she lambasted the way he presented himself during an interview for The Russell Harty Show in 1980 – four years before they divorced.
The actress recalled that she met the singer in Los Angeles at a number of dinner parties and at first she didn’t like what she saw.
Alana said: “I thought he was sort of very cocky and sure of himself and I thought, ‘Who does he think he is anyway?’”
When Rod asked a friend to invite her to have dinner with him she refused and stated: “I think that’s up to him to ask me himself.”
On their first date, her perception changed as she realised that he was a “really terrific person, very bright and very sensitive”.
Alana added: “He was all of these things that I didn’t think he was and he had a wonderful sense of humour.
“We stayed up until six o’clock in the morning talking and I had a completely different impression of him then.”

When asked if she was put off the stories published about his philandering, she claimed not to have read any before they were an item.
Alana said: “I live in Los Angeles and I wasn’t able to read all the English papers and all the British publicity that had been written – I probably wouldn’t have gone out with him.”
She rejected claims to have “tamed” Rod after the pair got married in 1979 and had children Kimberly and Sean.

Talking about their children, Alana added: “He would rather spend more time with them than be out at nightclubs or up all night or breaking up hotel rooms or whatever.”
She claimed “getting older” likely led him to lead less of a stereotypical rock and roll lifestyle.
Rod interjected: “I think I’ve got things in perspective now, the Scottish national football team is not the most important thing in the world and soccer… and music isn’t.
“They are important but the little kids, ‘the saucepans’, are the most important thing and my wife of course.”
