We all want to care about things, but the superfan goes to lengths that far surpass the regular fan.
For eons we’ve worshipped at the altars of sports stars, pop stars, actors, fictional characters, collectables, art, cars, and just about anything else we can relate to, that we can buy, that we can love and share with others.
Also known as a ‘fanatic’ (but, let’s face it, ‘fan’ is much more sexy), these superfans have travelled the globe to support their chosen love, spent hundreds of thousands on merchandise, altered their body in dramatic ways, some have even changed their names – and we’ve tracked down the most die-hard and dedicated to telling their story.
Each week we’ll bring you the story of one keen punter who has dedicated their life and time (and money, so.much.money) to supporting someone or something – simply because it brings them immeasurable joy.
And that’s what life’s about, right?
Say hi to Metro.co.uk’s super fun superfan weekly series, I’m Your Biggest Fan.
Manda Dyer is the real deal and perhaps the biggest fan of Pink in the world. Legit, she’s been voted Pink’s biggest fan in Australia – so, you know, it’s official.
Not only has she travelled the world to see the performer in concert, standing front row, she’s met various members of her team and has a tattoo dedicated to the popstar.
Going even further, Manda, who hails from Vincentia, New South Wales, in Australia, drives around in a car that’s covered in images of Pink posing and performing, as well as the singer’s husband Carey Hart and daughter Willow.
That’s dedication, right?
So, Manda, why Pink?
I love Pink because she is real and writes about real issues and day to day living problems. For me personally, her music has got me through my darkest days. I suffer from depression, anxiety and PTSD and her music, in particular the songs The Great Escape, Nobody Knows and F*cking Perfect, keep me living.
I put these songs on when I am down and her voice and the lyrics give me the strength to keep going when I’m feeling like I can’t go on.
She is an amazing human being and role model. She wears her heart on her sleeve and is not afraid to voice her opinion. Pink is a strong, hardworking independent woman and an inspirational mum to her two beautiful kids.
No better reason to pick an idol! Tell me about your car…
Firstly, I guess I should start by mentioning that I purchased my P!nk Tribute Car already airbrushed from the original owner whose husband airbrushed it for her.
Many times while driving my P!nk Tribute Car I forget that I’m in it as I own an everyday car also. People stare and point and my first thought is ‘What’s going on’ and I then have a little chuckle to myself.
What has it brought to your town?
I have used my car for school formals and a wedding. Many people have had photo shoots with it. I love that I can share the happiness that my car gives me to fellow Pink fans. Pink has actually seen my car and tweeted about it on her personal Twitter account.
And you’re her biggest Aussie fan, right?
I won a competition through The Today Show here in Australia where they wanted to find ‘Pink’s Biggest Aussie Fan’. My pic of myself next to my tribute car won and the prize was to see Pink live in concert in LA. It was an amazing experience!
Last year I was lucky enough to see her in concert in three countries (USA, Australia and New Zealand). In total last year I saw Pink perform once in LA, three times in Sydney and three times in New Zealand.
I’ve seen Pink’s concerts since her I’m Not Dead tour.
That’s amazing! And you’ve got a tattoo, right?
I have got a tattoo on the back of my neck with Pink’s eyes and the words ‘Who Knew’ which is my favourite Pink song.
This year I unfortunately missed out on getting her autograph which I wanted on my arm so that I could get it tattooed. This is my biggest dream!
I have got all of Pink’s albums and my home theatre is decorated with framed photos and memorabilia.
So you’ve never met Pink, right? We need to make this happen!
I met Pink’s accountant, Judd White, while staying in our hotel in LA, the Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood. I caught up with him again in both Australia and New Zealand.
I also got the opportunity to meet Butch Walker who wrote some of the songs with Pink, like Mean. I met him at the Pink concert at the Staples Center in LA.
And I was also blessed to have met Mark Schulman, Pink’s drummer, at their hotel in Auckland. I was even luckier to be thrown his drumstick as a souvenir from one of the New Zealand concerts.
