Piers Morgan branded health secretary Matt Hancock’s latest comments “shameful”, as the latter gave an update on the coronavirus panedemic in the UK. The Good Morning Britan presenter took to Twitter to call him out in view of his 7.3 million followers.

The 55-year-old said he couldn’t “believe what I just witnessed” as he critcised the politcian, 41, for his response to a question from a journalist.

The Conservative Party member said “I don’t have an update on the figure”, quoting 19 from a previous update.

However, the current number of NHS staff to have died from coronavirus stands at 31.

“Wow,” Piers posted. “The Health Secretary doesn’t know how many NHS staff have died in this crisis???!! This is shameful.”

The outspoken journalist continued: “You should be informed of every single one @MattHancock & know the exact number every time you’re asked at these briefings.

“The Health Secretary @MattHancock cares so much about our NHS heroes that he doesn’t bother to find out how many of them have died fighting Coronavirus before leading the Govt daily press briefing.”

He stated bluntly, in disbelief: “Genuinely can’t believe what I just witnessed.”

Piers pointed out: “It’s 31, @MattHancock – that’s the number of NHS workers who have currently died as a result of Coronavirus. Why do I know that but you don’t?”

It comes after a Cardiff nurse, a plaster technician in Doncaster and a pharmacy worker in Merseyside were among the latest victims to be identified.

Earlier today Matt was asked about the current NHS staff death toll due to coronavirus.

He was qestioned in the live TV update: “Do you have updated figures on the number of NHS workers that have died after getting coronavirus? And what are you doing to establish the reasons why?”

He replied: “Yes, this is a really important question and I don’t have an update on the figure of 19 NHS staff who have died that I gave yesterday.”

Matt went on: “But what I can tell you is that we’re looking into each circumstance to understand as much as is possible, how they caught the virus.

“Whether that was at work or outside of work, and the clinical setting that they were working in.”

He finished: “And making sure we learn as much as we possibly can and therefore of course protect our health workers as much as possible.”

Piers went on to criticise the government, after the number of UK coronavrius deaths went on 10,000.

He uploaded: “Hearing the Govt may not be putting anyone up to speak to the media tomorrow morning despite UK death toll surging past 10,000 including 31 NHS staff.

“This is totally unacceptable @10DowningStreet @DominicRaab @MattHancock – don’t you dare hide from accountability.”

It comes hours after Piers Morgan spoke out on “debonair” Sir Stirling Moss, following the Formula One star’s death aged 90.
