Nick Carter, 42, performed with the Backstreet Boys less than 24 hours after hearing that his brother Aaron, 34, had been found dead. The singer became emotional during one of their songs at London’s O2 Arena, and was comforted by his bandmates in a tender and solemn moment.
The Backstreet Boys are currently on their DNA World Tour, and Nick still performed in London on Sunday evening despite hearing about his brother’s death less than 24 hours before.
During their performance of Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely, Nick was overcome with emotion and ultimately couldn’t finish his verse.
In a candid moment, his bandmates surrounded the singer in a group hug and none were left without tears in their eyes.
Following the song, band member Kevin Richardson gave a heartfelt speech, paying tribute to Aaron as Nick continued to mourn his brother.
Aaron had been found dead in his California home on Saturday, although the cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
Kevin became choked up with emotion as he said: “That song is very special to us because that song is about family.
“Tonight we’ve got heavy hearts because we lost one of our family members yesterday.
“We just wanted to find a moment in our show to recognize him. He’s a part of our family and we thank you guys for all your love and support.”
Just hours before the performance, Nick broke his silence on the situation over social media with some heartbreaking throwback photos of him and his brother.
The singer wrote on Twitter: “My heart is broken.
“Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded.
“I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.
“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness are the real villains here.
“I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know.
“I love you baby brother.”
Aaron’s twin sister, Angel Conrad, 34, also shared an emotional post with her Instagram followers, sharing photos of the two as young children.
She captioned the post: “To my twin… I loved you beyond measure. You will be missed dearly.
“I know you’re at peace now. I will carry you with me until the day I die and get to see you again.”
Aaron’s sudden death shocked fans as just a week before the rapper had hinted at upcoming projects and seemed excited for what his future held.
Aaron announced in the tweet on October 29 that he was selling his second home, writing: “Ready for a new chapter in my 3rd home which I plan on staying to make a beautiful life for my family.
“This year has been super tough but I’ve learned so much. Thanks for the support everyone.”
