Multiple Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter and pianist Dr. John has died at the age of 77.

A family statement released by his publicist said the music legend died of a heart attack “towards the break of day June 6.”

“The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course,” the statement said.

Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., known as Dr. John, was known for his influential brand of blues rock music.

The New Orleans native won six Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

In the Right Place, released in 1973, was Dr. John’s best selling album.

In 2016, in a concert titled “The Musical Mojo of Dr. John,” an array of great musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Mavis Staples and John Fogerty paid tribute to the music legend by performing some of his most loved songs.
