Monty Don, 65, was criticised by one of his followers after he seemed to bluntly reply to a fan who had praised a pair of dangly earrings they believed he had made for them back in the 1970s. The Gardeners’ World host owned a jewellery business with his wife Sarah Don before they went bankrupt in 1987 when the stock market crashed.
Simply correcting misattribution

The fan shared a photo of their beloved cross style earrings made in what appeared to be jade and gold.
They typed: “Hello @TheMontyDon. You made these earrings for me in about 1977?
“Thank you, they are still going strong.” (sic)
Monty decided to respond and clarify that his shop had not begun trading until 1981.
He replied: “I am afraid I did not – we started making Jewellery in 1981.”
His frank response, was pulled up by another of his followers, who thought the famous gardener was perhaps being a bit mean-spirited over the fan’s message.
They said: “Bit harsh Mr D.”
Monty clarified he was not being “harsh” but was instead helping the fan to credit the jeweller who actually made the earrings.
He hit back: “No, simply correcting misattribution – someone’s else’s work.”
The 65-year-old previously shared with Express.co.uk that he and his wife became “lambs to the slaughter” after their jewellery company went bankrupt.
The gardening expert ended up surviving on dole money throughout the 1990s after the stock market crash of 1987 took all their life’s savings.
Monty recalled: “We were lambs to the slaughter and we lost everything, we lost our house, our business. We sold every stick of furniture we had.”

Following the closure of the business, Monty published his first book The Jewel Garden.
The premise for the novel was born out of the ashes of the couples commercial failure.
In The Jewel Garden, Monty shared how he and Sarah had transformed the muddy fields around their Tudor farmhouse.
Monty spoke in the book on how the outdoors saved him from the abyss of depression and how soil has healing powers.
After losing all their money, Monty was forced to survive for a number of years government benefits, which has inspired his incredible work ethic since.
However, the star acknowledged that he is now in a privileged position these days, as he pointed out how many have lost work as a result of COVID-19.
He said: “No question, I am very lucky. I lost half my filming work this year but compared to most people I’ve had a very, very easy time of it.
“Most years I have another fulfilling project. Last year it was America [for the new book and accompanying documentary], before that, I went to Japan, India and Iraq and before that Morocco and Spain and Turkey.
“This is the first time since 2011 that I haven’t had something else on the go that has taken me away.”
