Meghan Markle was seen visiting a women’s shelter to “offer support” in her first appearance since the Duchess, along with her husband Prince Harry, announced they would be leaving the UK for Canada.

The Duchess of Sussex was seen leaving Vancouver Island, where the royal couple recently enjoyed a six-week-long break during Christmas, to head to the mainland.

Meghan visited the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in one of Canada’s poorest neighbourhoods, where she spoke to staff to discuss issues in the community.

In a photo of the smiling Duchess shared to the shelter’s Facebook page, Meghan is seen in the centre of the group while posing with eight women.

They captioned the snap: “Look who we had tea with today!

“The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community.”

The shelter provides counselling, hot meals, and basic needs for women and children in need.

One staff member said of the visit: “She asked what the women would need in terms of support. It was a nice meeting.”

It comes after the Queen said she was “entirely supportive” of her grandson Harry and his decision to step down as a senior member of the Royal family alongside Meghan.

The statement, shared by Buckingham Palace, read: "Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

"Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.
