Lady Gaga is taking her pain from former heartbreak and turning it into one of the most highly anticipated pop albums of the year.
The “Stupid Love” singer sat down with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe to discuss her upcoming album, Chromatica, set to release on May 29. Per Us Weekly, during the interview, Gaga alluded to the fallout of some of her past relationships as fuel for inspiring the new record.
“The sound, the music, being myself. How can I take something that’s extremely painful for me and find the one piece of it that’s universally human and help somebody else? And then see what it sounds like,” explained Gaga when asked why she decided to begin production on the new project.
The singer then went on to reveal a few lyrics from “Free Woman,” one of the album’s tracks. “I’m not nothing without a steady hand / I’m not nothing unless I know I can,” recited Gaga. “I’m still something if I don’t got a man / I’m a free woman.”
Gaga has opened up over the years about her struggles to retain love while navigating her monstrously huge career. In her 2017 Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, the pop star hinted that her success often derailed her relationships.
“My threshold for bullshit with men is … I don’t have one anymore,” declared Gaga in the documentary. “Maybe cause I’m 30 and I feel better than ever, you know? All my insecurities are gone, I don’t feel insecure about who am I as a woman. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of what I have.”
Even with the loss of love being the core theme of Chromatica, fans shouldn’t expect a solemn soundtrack of heartbreak. Gaga has insisted multiple times that her new album, unlike 2016’s Joanne, will be a high-energy dance record.
“I’m making a dance record again. And this dance floor, it’s mine and I earned it,” Gaga said to Lowe. “And all that stuff that I went through, I don’t have to feel pain about it anymore. It can just be a part of me, and I can keep going.”
