Jeremy Irons has expressed his sympathy for Meghan Markle, saying her struggle to join the British Royal family is a 'huge shame' for the monarchy.
The veteran actor's comments came as he compared the House of Gucci family portrayed in the new film by Ridley Scott to the Royals.
The Dead Ringers actor plays patriarch Rodolfo Gucci in the feature, which tells the true story surrounding the relationship between Patrizia Reggiani and her husband Maurizio Gucci.
Describing how Patrizia’s character – played onscreeen by Lady Gaga – marries into the Gucci family, Jeremy referenced Meghan's experience and how much of a “shame” it all turned out for those involved.
“I sometimes think Meghan is a bit of a Patrizia,” he told The Evening Standard.
“She’s moving into a different way of life, a different class, a different nationality and trying to do her best and it is not working, which I think is a huge shame for our monarchy.
“That’s a parallel story.”
Meghan’s journey with the Royal family shares similarities with Patrizia’s story of struggling to fit in and feeling like an outsider, making for an understandable comparison made by Jeremy.
In 2020, she and Prince Harry exited the Royals in an unprecedented move and departed to the US to raise their own family and continue on with work duties.
A year after leaving and resettling, Prince Harry and Meghan spoke with Oprah in an interview about why they felt it was time to move on from being with the Windsors in the UK.
Jeremy says of the Gucci family that they “thought themselves as Royalty” where they resided in Italy, which triggered burgeoning egos and lead to murderous circumstances, which the film dives into.
Discussing his experience shooting with legendary director Ridley Scott, the 73-year-old had much praise to give.
“Ridley shoots with many cameras at the same time. Four cameras on Gucci,” he continued.
“On the first picture I did with him, he sometimes had about seven cameras going.
“That’s wonderful because it means you don’t have to do a performance and then reverse and then different angles and remember what on earth you were doing on take two when it was that way around.
“So that’s glorious. It also makes it very, very fast.”
The style in which House of Gucci has been shot, along with the film’s portrayal of the dramatic history behind Gucci has been met with critical praise and has proved a hit with audience since its release.
