Bushwick Bill, a key member of the Geto Boys, died on Sunday at a Colorado hospital following a battle with cancer. The rapper was 52.

According to a statement issued by Bushwick Bill’s publicist Dawn P, the rapper “passed away peacefully this evening at 9:35 p.m.”

She added, “We are looking into doing a public memorial at a later date. His family appreciates all of the prayers and support and are asking for privacy at this time.”

Bushwick Bill, born Richard Shaw in Kingston, Jamaica, revealed his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis last month.

He told TMZ, “I figure keeping it to myself is not really helping nobody, and I’m not really afraid of dying because if anyone knows anything about me from [his 1992 song] ‘Ever So Clear,’ I died and came back already in June 1991, so I know what it’s like on the other side,” referring to the incident where he accidentally shot himself in the eye.

The diminutive rapper, who joined the Geto Boys in 1986 following a stint as the group’s dancer, appeared on seven of the group’s eight albums, from their 1988 debut Making Trouble to their 2005 reunion LP The Foundation.

The rapper, who had hits like “Mind Playing Tricks On Me” and “Six Feet Deep,” was reportedly working on three albums, which he hoped would generate residual income for his survivors.
