The former Strictly Come Dancing star has opened up about her traumatic delivery of baby daughter Mia, who she welcomed earlier this month.
Gemma Atkinson – who is dating Gorka Marqez, 28 – took to Instagram today where she shared a snap of herself in hospital as she cradled her newborn baby.
In a lengthy post, the 34-year-old detailed the “panic” she experienced during her delivery, revealing that she suffered a hemorrhage.
She told her 1.1million followers: “This picture was taken when Mia was 30 hours old. The weary smile on my face doesn’t quite portray how happy I was inside as 30 hours earlier, things could have gone very differently.”
Gemma continued to explain that her midwife had been concerned that Mia wouldn’t be “strong enough” for a smooth delivery and the decision was made to induce her.
She continued: “With every contraction, her heart rate dropped. On the third one, midwife Katie, who was taking care of me at the time, pressed the panic alarm and within 15 mins I was rushed out, prepped and delivered Mia via an emergency c-section.
“It wasn’t what I’d planned but, thanks to my hypnobirthing, despite the madness and panic, I was able to calmly keep my breathing technique and accept whatever is best for Mia just do it!”
However, things quickly went downhill for Gemma, as she explained: “Two hours later, I was alone with Gorks and Mia blissfully happy in a ward when I suddenly felt extremely unwell.
“Gorka got a doctor and she took one look at me and again pressed the panic button. I was having a hemorrhage, a big one and I lost a lot of blood.
“I don’t remember much other than having around nine doctors in the room, some injecting me, hooking me to drips, physically pulling clots out of me and one comforting Gorks who was beside himself in the corner.
“I woke in another room with Gorks and my family there, Mia sleeping soundly and a lovely midwife named Di who was checking my notes.”
Thankfully, Gemma managed to pull through and made a full recovery.
The TV star praised hospital staff along with Gorka and her mum for helping her throughout the traumatic experience.
She added: “The trauma was over and thanks to our NHS and incredible hospital staff we were ok.
“I’m going to remind Mia of this story any time she has doubts about what she can achieve in life. The odds were against her from the start, but she’s been a little fighter from day one.
“We’re so proud of her, she’s our little soldier and I’m so grateful.”
