Gabby, 47, had just finished recording her Radio 5 Live show when the unnamed boss criticised her Armani footwear at a meeting about corporation staff’s “visual appearance”. Suggesting she should not have worn them in the studio, he told a furious Gabby: “You wouldn’t wear those boots to empty the dishwasher at home.” The Match Of The Day co-presenter told him she liked people to think she “made an effort” and retorted she could not appear on TV in her slippers.
Gabby told her podcast The MidPoint: “I had an argument once which got a little heated.
“It was supposed to be a meeting. It was with a guy who was brought into the BBC to talk about our visual appearance.
“I immediately took a little bit of offence, I have to say, because I knew that I was probably spending more on my wardrobe than most of my colleagues.”
Recounting the row, Gabby said: “I’d been doing my show on 5 Live, so I’d come from radio and I was wearing some quite high Giorgio Armani boots, some tight trousers and a little jacket.
“The guy who was brought in said, ‘I think they’re going to say you’re too glamorous’ and I said, ‘Sorry? I don’t wear low-cut tops, I don’t wear short skirts – I never have. What do you mean?’
“He said, ‘Well, you know…you wouldn’t wear those boots to empty the dishwasher, would you?’
“I was so livid. I said, ‘I’ve just come off radio, where nobody sees me, and I’m wearing these boots.
“I’m going into people’s houses and I want them to think that I’ve made an effort because I’m in their living room. I’m not going to do it in my slippers – which I might empty the dishwasher in if I can’t cajole one of my children to empty the dishwasher by the way – because if I’m emptying it there’s something wrong in this house’.”
The ex-rhythmic gymnast, who began her presenting career in 2009 on the BBC’s Final Score, added: “I was amazed at that attitude. It’s madness.”
She married Scottish rugby union international Kenny Logan, now 48, in 2001.
The couple have two children, twins Lois and Reuben, 15.
The BBC did not respond to a request for comment yesterday.
