Extreme Makeover and Rock the Block star Ty Pennington has said he’s "happy to be here" after being rushed into intensive care just days after attending the Barbie premiere
The charismatic 58 year old TV presenter was taken into hospital after complaining of a sore throat for weeks, which turned out to be a large abscess that was “closing off” his airways.
In an Instagram post, Ty updated fans with a message that proved he’s in good spirits. He said: “From the red carpet to the ICU…
"I’m okay now, still recovering. Sunday I hit the red carpet for @barbiethemovie, Monday I flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckinridge and Tuesday morning I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe.
“Turns out, that sore throat I've had for the last month was actually an abscess which had grown so large it was closing off my airway. Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver,” he explained, alongside a pic of him in his hospital bed.
He says the whole experience has taught him an important lesson: “A great reminder to LISTEN to your body when it’s telling you something #justhappytobehere.”
Ty has been inundated with love and support from fans wishing him a swift recovery since he posted the update.
“We love you. So happy you are ok! Missed you in Breck but we are so happy you got the care you needed just in time. We all were (and still are) thinking of you and sending the most positive vibes! Speedy recovery brother,” shared TV presenting colleague Taniya Nayak.
Another said, “Feel better! You’re a national treasure.”
Ty was in attendance at the Barbie premiere after working on HGTV’s Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, which saw iconic designers and presenters such as Ty, Mike Jackson from Married to Real Estate, and HGTV royalty Christina Hall take part in a challenge to create the most epic life-size Barbie dreamhouse.
Ty was ecstatic to be a part of the show, which is presented by model Ashley Graham, and took to Instagram to share a hilarious billboard of himself dressed as a Ken doll.
Fans commented: “That’s gonna cause some major traffic jams and car accidents!”
The show is set to air tomorrow, Sunday 16 July.
Aside from his TV work, Ty has been keeping a low profile with new wife, 35-year-old Kellee Merrell. The two were married in were married in 2021 during an intimate ceremony held at their home in Savannah, Georgia.
