Dove Cameron and Thomas Doherty met on the set of Descendants 2 in 2016. The two dated for nearly four years, and in December 2020 Cameron announced that they split up a few months prior.
While some fans suspected the split due to the former couple’s lack of social media activity, the breakup still came as a shock to some because of how solid the relationship seemed to fans.
Thomas Doherty previously confirmed Dove Cameron was ‘the One’
In October 2019, Doherty sat down with Entertainment Tonight to discuss his roles in High Strung Free Dance and High Fidelity.
When asked if Cameron was “the One,” he replied “yeah” with a smile.
Doherty continued, “She is just the most incredible person I’ve ever met. I think people see her as so talented — because obviously that’s her job, to perform and all the rest of it — but she’s the most compassionate and the most patient and the most genuine, loving person I’ve ever met. And so kind and so generous. She’s amazing. She really is.”
It was love at first sight for Dove Cameron
In July 2019, Cameron was interviewed for Seventeen Magazine and talked about her relationship with Doherty.
“My relationship with Thomas has been different than anything I’ve ever experienced with another human right from the very start,” she said. “I know this is cheesy, but honestly, right from the moment we met, it felt like the earth moved, for both of us.”
Cameron added, “I’ve never experienced an equality like we have, a real admission of who and what we are together and the guttural knowing that this is right.”
Dove Cameron and Thomas Doherty broke up
After some speculation, Cameron announced the couple broke up on Dec. 11 on her Instagram story.
“hi all,” Cameron said in the statement. “We know there have been some rumors and confusion lately about the status of our relationship and we wanted to set the record straight.”
She continued, “In October, Thomas and I decided to part ways. The decision was incredibly difficult, but we still have love for each other, and will remain friends. thank you for allowing us our privacy at this time.”
The two had recently moved in together
In April 2020, Cameron spoke to PeopleTV about moving into a studio apartment with Doherty. Because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the two were adjusting to spending lots of time together.
“Even the healthiest of relationships right now, you need space, you need your alone time for your own relationship with yourself to flourish, but then also for your romantic relationship,” Cameron said. “We make sure to go get fresh air and open the doors as much as we can. We’ve been cooking loads.”
