Who knows how often they speak now (if at all), but Jay-Z and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore go way back. They reportedly met in the ‘90s while the rapper’s career was still in its infancy, and she even appeared in one of his videos.
Fans have long questioned the true nature of their relationship, wondering whether they were just friends or more than that. And, luckily for them, one of them has opened up about this before.
How Jay-Z and Moore met
They seemingly met around 1998 when the 4:44 rapper teamed up with Jermaine Dupri to shoot the video for their song, “Money Ain’t a Thang.” Dupri told VladTV in October of 2018 that they wanted the production to include models, and they eventually landed on Moore, a beauty queen who had been modeling since her early teenage years.
In the video, Moore plays Jay-Z’s love interest. He splurges on her throughout most of it, surprising her with diamonds, cash, and more. You can watch it here.
Moore fuels speculation that they were romantically involved
We didn’t see or hear much else about Jay-Z and Moore after filming wrapped. But in 2013, the reality star kicked the rumor mill into overdrive after she posted an old photo of herself riding in a car with Jay-Z.
The photo, which was taken on the set of the “Money Ain’t a Thang” video, led many to believe that she and the rapper were once an item, especially since she noted that the image was taken “pre-Beyonce.”
However, she later set the record straight on Twitter, writing that she never dated Jay-Z.
“Sorry… but NO I never dated Jay-Z. Only worked on the video. He and @jermainedupri were true gentlemen. #DumbRumors #TwirlOnThat,” Moore tweeted.
Jay-Z developed a crush on Beyoncé shortly after the video
Jay-Z revealed in the 2018 song “713” that he developed a crush on Beyoncé in 2000 after meeting her at MTV’s Spring Break festival in Cancun, Mexico.
Eight years later, they tied the knot in a secret ceremony. The musicians have since welcomed three children: Blue, Sir, and Rumi Carter. But the relationship has not been without its issues.
In 2016, there were rumors that Jay and Bey were on the verge of divorce after he’d allegedly cheated on her (which later turned out to be true).
Amid their troubles, Moore reportedly posted another throwback photo with the “99 Problems” rapper, once again fueling speculation that they used to date.
“On set of #moneyaintathang with Jay-Z circa 1998 #happytoworkwithhim such a gentleman and talented rapper turned mogul,” she allegedly wrote in a since-deleted post. “Wish @beyonce was there,” she added.
As you can imagine, the Beyhive did not take the post lightly and slammed the Bravo star for seemingly shading the “Love Drought” crooner. She deleted the post amid mounting criticism.
That said, it seems like Moore was only teasing and really did not have a relationship with Jay-Z. But he has dated some other people that might surprise you.
