Theo Campbell, known for starring on MTV’s “The Challenge” as well as reality show “Love Island” in the UK, has opened up in depth for the first time about the accident that left him almost completely blind in one eye.
The 28-year-old reality star appeared on Britain’s “This Morning” show Friday, and said that a young woman accidentally popped a bottle of champagne in his direction while on vacation in Ibiza, Spain, causing the injury.
“It’s a very eerie pain,” he said. “I couldn’t open either eye at first, and I just had my hand over [one], and I couldn’t see anything at all. I was stumbling.”
Campbell shared that he was in disbelief for two minutes until he looked down at the hand that was covering his right eye, and saw blood.
“From there, the security grabbed me, they took me to the medical room, and the medic looked at it,” he said, adding that doctors realized he needed to be taken to the emergency room right away.
Campbell said he was “in constant pain for the first two days,” even after he had eye surgery.
The former track athlete said he is hopeful that he will heal, but doctors don’t have much hope, and have told him, “You’ll never be able to see the same again. It might be a very long time before you start seeing anything, like, even in a blurry way.”
“But if I look now, I can see light,” Campbell added. “That’s the good part, but I explain it as looking through a stain glass window, because I can see, but everything is a massive blur.”
He posted on Instagram on Aug. 27 that he had been involved in an accident involving a champagne cork and thanked his girlfriend Kaz Crossley for her support.
He is also raising money for charity by running a 10K to support the Cure Blindness foundation.
