Florals for spring may not be groundbreaking (just ask Miranda Priestly), but when done for winter, perhaps they can be. Brie Larson made the case on Sunday night at the New York premiere of her latest film, Just Mercy. The actress wore a fuchsia flower-print dress with ruffles and ample décolletage by Alexander McQueen.
The thought of donning such an exuberant pattern, to be sure, isn’t what normally comes to mind when we think of red-carpet style during the cold-weather months. Black and other somber colors are usually de rigueur—evidenced by the spiffy suits worn by her costars Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan. Larson, however, showed that florals can certainly make an impact and still look apropos for the season.
The way the sleeveless, bosom-baring dress—designed by Alexander McQueen’s creative director, Sarah Burton, for pre-spring 2020—tiered at the bottom, hitting the ankle, allowed her heeled leather boots by Celine to peek through. It was also cinched at the waist with a leather obi belt with gold ringlets. Factor in the saturated hue and kaleidoscope-esque design of the flower print, and Larson had a bold look that didn’t recall a sunny atmosphere at all. To wit: It was a winning winter ensemble.
