Brandy Norwood has recruited Chance The Rapper for a brand-new single, “Baby Mama,” in honor of Mother’s Day.
In the song, the 41-year-old singer, who is a single mom to her 17-year-old daughter, Sy’rai Iman Smith, speaks about the struggles of being a single mom, along with a celebration of her independence and ability to make it on her own.
The video features an ensemble dance group donning colorful suits and bopping to the song in what appears to be a barn.
“You not the only one that can take out trash (Hmm, ah)/That can make the cash (Hmm, ah)/That can make her laugh (Hmm)/You not the only one that can make her brag,” Chance chimes in towards the end of the song.
“I feel so honored to be a mom and taking care of my baby,” Brandy said to Rolling Stone. “It’s a dedication to her and to all moms who are doing the same thing.”
Brandy and Chance initially met when the latter got in touch with her about sampling a portion of her 1994 song, “I Wanna Be Down.” After FaceTiming with each other, they formed an immediate connection and decided to collaborate with each other.
“He’s a family man. He’s a mother lover. He has great morals and is a role model,” she said of him. “The verse that he did was just mind-blowing.”
The track will be featured on the singer’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled, 7th studio album, which will be a follow-up to her 2012 record, Two Eleven.
