Mark Hoppus released a cover version of The Cars‘ 1978 hit “Just What I Needed” as a tribute to the band’s late singer Ric Ocasek.

The Blink-182 lead singer, who shared the track on Soundcloud on Tuesday, said he was approached to record the cover several years ago for a tv show, but he wasn’t motivated to release it until Ocasek’s passing over the weekend.

“They wanted moody and strange, dark, and drony, with space for dialogue to go over it,” Hoppus wrote. “I went into the studio with my friend James Ingram and this is what we came up with.”

“The show was cancelled so quickly the episode never aired,” he added. “It’s been sitting on a hard drive ever since, and with the sad news of Ric Ocasek’s passing, I thought I’d put it up here. Enjoy it. And go listen to The Cars.”

Ocasek, aged 75, passed away on September 15 in his New York City apartment following a battle with heart disease.
