In grossly upsetting news, the mullet has somehow weaseled its way back into our collective consciousness this year, which is maybe even worse than the bowl cut’s triumphant return (I blame you for that, Celine Dion). Billie Eilish seemed to be leaning into the mullet trend herself when she was spotted with a slightly new ‘do at the LACMA Art + Film Gala a few days ago, but like Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s Oscar performance, IT WAS ALL A LIE.

If you thought Billie was jumping on the somewhat unfortunate mullet bandwagon, then the joke’s on you, because starting trends is more of her thing anyway. She clarified during a casual airport chat with a TMZ reporter this week that her “mullet” is just the result of a burning dye job gone wrong.

“You know what happened? Somebody dyed my hair and they burnt half of it off and now it looks like a mullet,” she said. “That shit is not on purpose though.”

While the guy talking to her was fully #TeamMullet and told her she should keep it, Billie is not on board. “No, I’m growing that shit out,” she said.

Well there you go! An accidental mullet may have happened here, but this was less of an artistic choice and more of a 17 year old playing around with her hair and (literally) getting burned. It happens!
