1990s fashion trends have done a full hop, skip, and jump back onto the runways for 2021. According to Cosmopolitan, a few grunge era fashion moments we can expect to see being recycled this summer include bucket hats (blame Lacoste, via Who What Wear), cargo pants, and mom jeans. But the nostalgia doesn’t end there. Make room in your closets for 1990s-era accessory staples like leather chokers, chain belts, and animal-shaped backpacks.
And no 1990s babe look is complete without the perfect ‘do. The pandemic has left many heads of hair untamed due to salon shutdowns, and those brave enough to chop their own tresses are likely dealing with some serious hair hangovers. David Mallet New York Salon’s dry cut specialist, Dhiran Mistry, explained, “As a result of quarantine, a lot of people have been coming in with very grown out hair with no shape as they hadn’t had the chance to get a proper haircut (outdoor garden haircuts included),” as noted by Byrdie.
These shaggy locks offer the perfect canvas for summer 2021’s most sought after haircut, and it takes inspiration from the decade of Radiohead and “Pulp Fiction.”
This summer's trendy hair look is the blunt, one-length bob
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know summer 2021 will be bringing back 1990s hair classics, like the curtain bang and face-framing layers (via Byrdie), but the number one hair look of the season is the bold, one-length bob. Beat the summer heat waves and elongate your neck and jawline with this shoulder-length chop. Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon stylist, Sky Kim, is a huge advocate for this look, calling it the “modern Princess Diana.”
Kim insists the blunt bob is “a classic look and gives you a sense of nostalgia and newness that we all have been craving” (via Byrdie). But if you need more convincing, trust celebrities like Kaia Gerber, Solange Knowles, and Rihanna (via Harper’s Bazaar) who prove that this look works on any hair texture. Better yet, the one-length bob is the perfect hair match for any girl-on-the-go, as it’s low maintenance and easy to maintain.
Celebrity hair stylist Cher’e Nichole recommends using “a 1.5-inch flatiron, some serum, and some shine spray” to unlock your inner hair goddess (via Byrdie). So this summer, think bold, choppy locks and you’ll be good to go!
