How long IS Killers of the Flower Moon? Scorsese’s new western is his second longest film ever – see where his other classics rank

  • The crime-drama masterpiece will be released in US theaters tomorrow
  • It premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May
  • The movie received positive reviews from critics

The highly anticipated Martin Scorsese western crime-drama Killers of the Flower Moon is almost here, and it is a lengthy film to say the least.

It was hailed as a ‘triumph’ by critics after it premiered and was met with a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival last May.

Based on a true story, Killers of the Flower Moon centers around the Osage Native American murders that took place between 1918 and 1931.

Filming took place in Pawhuska, Fairfax, and Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 2021, and wrapped that October.

It’s Scorsese’s seventh film to reach the three-hour mark, and second longest feature production to date, coming in at a whopping 3 hour and 26-minute show time.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Scorsese have worked together in seven films – many of which are Academy Award nominated

The famed director’s longest feature film is The Irishman – A Netflix production starring Killers of the Flower Moon lead Robert De Niro that beat the recently released movie length by three minutes.

Coincidently, Scorsese’s third longest feature film coming in at three hours on the dot is The Wolf of Wall Street, which stars Killers of the Flower Moon lead Leonardo DiCaprio.

Scorsese made his lengthiest films in the documentary genre – his longest being 1999’s My Voyage to Italy.

The movie is an ode to Italian cinema history and is astonishingly 4 hours and 6 minutes long.

1995’s A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies comes in second place at 3 hours and 45 minutes.

His last two over-three-hour films are 2005’s No Direction Home: Bob Dylan and 2011’s George Harrison: Living in the Material World.

The 1999 documentary My Voyage to Italy pays tribute to Italian cinema, and is currently Scorsese’s longest movie at 4 hours and 6 minutes long

The Lord of the Rings trilogy received critical acclaim, and the deluxe edition of its final film chimed in at 4 hours and 11 minutes long

Kill Bill Volume: 1 and Kill Bill Volume: 2 were  planned to be one over four-hour long film before separating them into two parts

Scorsese is not the only director to make over four-hour movies, and is actually not in the category of directors that had the potential of making feature films that long.

The 2004 film Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the final movie in the trilogy that chimed in at 3 hours and 1 minute.

The extended version however is a long and action-filled 4 hour and 11 minute movie that was a great way to close out the trilogy.

Kill Bill Volume: 1 and Kill Bill Volume: 2 were released in 2003 and 2004 as two feature films that were not close to the three-hour mark.

However, if director Quentin Tarantino had it his way, the two films would’ve been one whole action packed martial arts movie with a length time of over four hours.
