The season three finale of Stranger Things saw Dustin Henderson (played by Gaten Matarazzo) finally get in touch with Suzie (Gabriella Pizzolo) the girl he fell for at Science Camp.
Before Suzie helps Dustin shut the gate to the Upside down by reminding him of the Planck constant code, she insisted the two take part in a duet.
While the pair singing ‘NeverEnding Story’ provided a heartwarming moment amongst the horror that had taken over Hawkins, some fans felt this cost the life of Jim Hopper (David Harbour) who disappeared into the Upside Down.
Meanwhile, a second death took place as Billy came to his senses just in time to sacrifice himself to the Mind Flayer to save Eleven.
Fans were furious that all this took place while the two showed off their vocals, with many taking their rage to social media.
One fan tweeted: “IF SUZIE WOULD’VE JUST GIVEN DUSTIN THE PLANKS CONSTANT BILLY AND HOPPER WOULD’VE STILL BEEN ALIVE! but am I still streaming this fire hit; the answer is yes”
A second added: “Maybe if you hadn’t felt the need to have your little disney moment with dustin… HOPPER AND BILLY WOULD STILL BE ALIVE.”
A third added: “#StrangersThings3 all ima say is that if suzie would have hurried up maybe hopper would still be alive. Let that sink in.”
Although many fans are still enraged at the two deaths a month after the season dropped, all is not lost as a number of hints suggest Hopper is still very much alive.
Moreover, fans could see him again should there be a season four after bosses let slip a huge clue about his whereabouts.
In a podcast interview with Entertainment Weekly, the pair spoke about the show’s numerous throwback references to 80s films.
The pair confirmed the Star Wars film ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ was referenced in the last outing through Hopper’s storyline, which implies he is in fact alive.
Matt Duffer said: “We always talk about Empire Strikes Back – we always wanted to give him a darker ending, we always wanted to give him a Han Solo sacrifice moment.”
Star Wars viewers will be aware that Hans Solo reappeared, proving to be alive in ‘Return of the Jedi’.
If the next outing was to follow this storyline, this would confirm a previous fan theory by Politico’s Bill Kuchman, who also likened Hopper’s arc to Star Wars character Han Solo’s.
Bill said: “‘I’ll see you in hell’ is a direct quote from Han Solo in Empire Strikes Back, the film where Han was frozen in carbonite and taken to another world.
“Steve’s favourite Star Wars movie? The one with the teddy bears, aka Return of the Jedi…” Bill added.
Star Wars’ Return of the Jedi sees Han’s friends rescue him from imprisonment in an enemy’s fortress.
If season four is confirmed, fans could see the Hawkins’ crew take to Russia on a quest to free Hopper.
