KATHERINE Ryan has slammed parent-shamers who say her husband Bobby Kootstra is “getting a free ride.”

The comedian, 40, who welcomed her third child Fenna Grace in December, has been forced to hit back at mum-shamers on social media in the past.

And now she’s jumped to defend her husband after cruel trolls called into question his role as a stay at home dad.

Katherine told The Sun: “Bobby gets a different kind of toxicity. Part of feminism and equal pay and rights and political standings and all that stuff is about giving families the option to stay at home with their kids, and I think that’s a wonderful thing.

“But sometimes people reach out and say to me ‘well he’s just getting a free ride. He doesn’t work.’

“You wouldn’t say that to a stay at home mum because we all know that looking after children – especially very small children – is a really difficult job.

Inside Katherine Ryan’s garden transformation

“For some reason, we still find it appropriate to shame men for not earning a living in the same way you might shame a woman for going to work.”

Katherine finished by saying: “We’ve still got to iron out a lot of this gender stuff, but luckily it doesn’t phase Bobby.”

The star is a mum-of-three, and shares her daughter Violet with her ex, and her younger children Fred and Fenna Grace with Bobby.

The pair were young lovebirds back in the day and 20 years later, in 2018, they rekindled their relationship after she returned to Canada to film BBC show Who Do You Think You Are?.

Katherine also opened up on her role as a mum, admitting she does find it “difficult” to juggle parenting with her career.

She said: “My children are blessings, but I am finding it difficult to balance everything because I’m not really getting on stage at the minute.

“We are very much in the trenches of raising small, small children and I know from experience that it doesn’t last forever.

“But that said, I am finding it difficult to tear myself away from dinnertime, bedtime, bath time…”

But Katherine’s career is still booming, and as well as planning an “imminent” return to comedy, the star also just hosted a reunion episode of 90 Day Fiance.

She’s also been busy working alongside Gousto, as the face of their latest campaign – The Dinner Show.

The Dinner Show database includes Gousto’s top 50 food scenes from our screens: from Big Kahuna Burgers in Pulp Fiction to the much-loved spaghetti scene in Lady and the Tramp.

It includes timestamps and recipes so foodie fans can skip to the most delicious parts of their favourite TV shows and movies and recreate appetising meals from unforgettable shows.

Katherine said of her involvement: “I love The Dinner Show because I love TV – I work in TV, I watch TV, and I feel inspired by the food I see on some of the shows.
