The Taylor family are set to lose their matriarch later this year, with it being confirmed that Lorraine Stanley is leaving her role of Karen Taylor after seven eventful years.

Bosses have opted to write out the character, who has been central to the community of Albert Square, often in very chaotic fashion.

Brash and often argumentative, one of her first acts was to punch Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) in the face, setting a bit of a precedent.

She has managed to get many backs up but, across her years, she has built friendships too.

And, one thing that can’t be argued is her protective nature for her family.

So, this begs the question – if the rest of the Taylors and Bakers are staying put, what could possibly tear Karen away from them?

Walford is often home to a tragedy, so speculation understandably has instantly landed on a very final end for Karen.

While the storylines are under wraps for the time being, it would take something significant to make Karen decide to leave, both because she would always stay with her family and also that she considers Walford home these days.

Of course, there are likely to be many developments between now and a goodbye which would make a decision to walk away from Albert Square more likely.

However, one thing that would propel those left behind into new and dramatic storylines would be for a tragic death in the mix.

With Keanu (Danny Walters) constantly in chaos, losing his mum would be a tipping edge point.

And Bernie (Clair Norris) is really finding her place with a new job and an upcoming friendship group – so having everything turned on its head in such a spectacular fashion would propel her to the front of the emotional action.

And then there are the Bakers – how would they navigate a post-Karen world, and could Mitch (Roger Griffiths) deal with more tragedy after losing his daughter Chantelle?

Karen’s storylines have included constant worries brought on by her kids, struggles with family poverty, discovering that Gray killed Chantelle, and getting embroiled in a number of punch-ups.

Lorraine isn’t the only one departing either, with Shona McGarty leaving her iconic role of Whitney Dean after 15 years, with the actress and singer wanting to ‘spread her wings.’

In this case, it seems likely that the door will be left open and, after so many traumas, fans have everything crossed that she might have a happy ending for a change.
