Looking for a way to juice up your summer wardrobe? Then may I direct you to the latest look sweeping the style scene: tomato girl.

With more than 3.7 million views on TikTok, ‘tomato girl’ style is shaping up to be one of the most popular trends of the season. And it’s not just the young fashionistas of social media who are wearing it; celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Kate Moss and model Emily Ratajkowski are turning tomato, too.

So what on Earth is it? As the name implies, the tomato girl aesthetic involves wearing plenty of hot red — however, that’s just the start.

Taking inspiration from the Mediterranean, this look is all about channelling La Dolce Vita in sun-drenched colours, romantic ruffles, vintage prints and easy-breezy fabrics.

Think Gwyneth Paltrow’s Marge in The Talented Mr Ripley meets The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge.

Puff sleeves, linen dresses, basket bags, espadrilles — if you can imagine wearing it on the back of a Vespa zipping along the Amalfi Coast, you’re on the right track. Escapism dressing at its finest, the emergence of tomato girl couldn’t be better timed.

With the great British summer currently a washout, what better way to evoke sunshine vibes than throwing on something bright and playful? I’ll be embracing the trend to cheer up my imminent Cornish caravan trip.

Let’s hope the village shop sells Aperol. If you are jetting away this summer, though, consider tomato girl the ultimate holiday wardrobe.

Colourful cotton dresses can be worn with a basket for market shopping, then dressed up with gold jewellery for Aperitivo hour.

A linen shirt makes a chic cover-up around the pool and can be paired with shorts when sightseeing. Take your cue from actress Sydney Sweeney, star of Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, and add a silk headscarf and oversized sunglasses.

For those with summer weddings in the diary, make like the Marchioness of Bath, Emma Weymouth, and reach for a splashy floral-print gown (hers was Dolce and Gabbana; try Reformation for something cheaper).

Looking just to dip a toe into the trend? Try Cosmetic à la Carte’s lipstick in Pachino red. Named after the tomatoes, the long-lasting formula can withstand slurps of spaghetti pomodoro — what could be more tomato girl?
