Eamonn Holmes opens up about friend being killed by car
On Thursday’s instalment of GB News, Eamonn Holmes recalled the death of a friend when speaking about road safety.
It comes as campaigners in England are calling for a default 20 mph speed limit to be put in place where people live, work and go to school.
After speaking to Amanda Stretton about the proposed limit, Eamonn told Ellie Costello about what happened during his childhood.
He said: “When I was nine, a playmate in my street went to school one day and he didn’t come back.
“He was knocked down crossing the road outside his school.”

“That was a huge shock to us, myself and one of my brothers, that our friend had been killed by a car.”
Touching on the proposed speed limit, Eamonn confessed people would abide by the rules if they knew the areas where speeds had to be reduced.
He added: “You can see maybe if you take this policy and you apply it, and people know this is what happens when it’s a school, hospital or whatever. We go to 20mph.
“I think people would obey that, people would understand it.”

Agreeing, Ellie told Eamonn she had watched a demonstration which showed a bus hitting a boulder at 20mph.
She said: “It barely touches the bus really, then again at 30mph. By the time you hit 70mph, people on the top deck are all on the road.
“They’ve all fallen through the glass and gone onto the road, that difference in miles per hour makes such a difference when you’re talking about impact.”
Although Eamonn questioned when she’d ever seen a bus go at such high speeds, Ellie replied it was still terrifying to watch.
He replied: “No, it’s a serious subject.”
During the topic, Eamonn highlighted he understood the 20mph policy when approaching a high street or school but saw it as far too slow for everywhere else.
Ellie mentioned it’s better for fuel consumption if people drive slower along with improving the quality of air.
