A two-year-old child has been found after a thief stole a car with the toddler inside in Melbourne’s south-east on Monday afternoon.
Police said a black Kia Carnival – registration 1WU5QT – was parked on Cleeland Street in Dandenong about 3.25pm when it was stolen with the child sitting in the rear seat.

The child was found at about 4.35pm inside a Woolworths supermarket in Ferntree Gully, about 15 kilometres north of Cleeland Street, detective senior sergeant Dean Hayes told 3AW radio.
He said the child’s parents were nearby when their car and toddler were taken. Witnesses told police they saw the vehicle heading towards Heatherton Road after the theft.
“[The child] is very safe and well and is being reunited with their parents as we speak,” Hayes said.
The car has not yet been found.
In a separate incident in January, two men were charged after a car was stolen in Chelsea, in Melbourne’s south-east, with a two-year-old child asleep in the back seat.
The father was left traumatised when he left his car unlocked to quickly buy an ice cream and the thieves jumped inside the vehicle, driving off with his son in the back. The toddler was found soon after on the side of a road, crying and distraught in only a nappy.
