Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has shared an emotional message after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The dancer, 32, posted a throwback picture to her Instagram stories showing her performing on the hit BBC celebrity talent show as she discussed her hopes of getting back on the dancefloor.

She wrote: “This feeling performing is like no other! The emotion, excitement, adrenalin and I can't wait for it for it again. It feeds my souls!

“Thank u for every single comment and message today! It means so much to me and my incredible family I'm so lucky to be surrounded by! Thank you [sic].”

The throwback image she shared – of her performing alongside child dancers Luca Ivanets and Pebble-Rose Spratt during last year's Blackpool Week – held extra poignancy because of its original caption.

When Amy first posted the picture in February, she wrote: “Your allowed days where you feel down but I always try to remember how far I’ve come, how I’m living the dream and I’ve got so much more to give.

“I would go back and tell my younger self so much right now and today I need to remind myself this! Thanks for all the love guys!”

Amy – who has partnered up on Strictly with celebrities such as Tom Fletcher, Karim Zeroual and EastEnders favourite James Bye – revealed on Wednesday that she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.

The dancer shared the devastating news on Instagram.

She wrote: "Hey all, I've got some news to share which isn't easy. I've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer but I'm determined to get back on that dance floor before you know it."

She signed off the post: "Welsh love, Amy x."

Strictly bosses are backing Amy in her recovery and will 'keep the door open' for her potential return when she feels better. Even if she is not able to join the whole season, she may return for special episodes of the show when it resumes in September.

Strictly stars past and present shared messages of support after Amy’s diagnosis was revealed. Within minutes of her initial Instagram post, well wishes began flooding in.

Fellow professional Dianne Buswell wrote: “Our Welsh dragon is going to fight this!!!! and I can not wait for the moment you are back on that dance floor with us. We love you so much Amy.”

Gorka Marquez wrote: “We are all in this with you!! Sending all our strength. And you will be with us in the less than 8 counts. We love you Amy.”

Johannes Radebe added: “Sending you love and strength Darling Amy.”

Karen Hauer posted: “We love you and we are here with you in every little step. You are strong and you will beat this.”

Also on Wednesday, former Strictly contestant Tyler West – the Kiss FM DJ – said Amy’s diagnosis was "a massive shock to the system" but described the dancer as a ‘strong, inspirational fighter’.
