THROUGH plenty of dramatic twists and turns, many real-life issues make it to the box, bringing unexpected change.

According to a former Emmerdale star, one Coronation Street storyline even saved his mother's life.

Kris Mochrie took to Instagram on Monday (January 30, 2023) to pay tribute to his "extremely brave Mum."

The former Lee Posner actor was proud of his mother after an article she wrote was published mere hours before in Woman & Golf.

In this "lovely, candid piece", Kris' mother spoke about how golf helped her recover from a harrowing breast cancer diagnosis – which she would have never thought of had she not watched Coronation Street.

Kris explained his mother checked herself following a Corrie storyline about breast cancer.

Her quick action saved her life as it contributed to her full recovery from the illness.

"This is my incredible, kind and extremely brave Mum", Kris penned alongside a snap of his beloved mother.

"In 2009, she was diagnosed with breast cancer."

"The only reason Mum checked herself was because of a storyline in Coronation Street where Sally Webster finds a lump in her breast."

Kris then added: "Mum made a full recovery thanks to acting quickly. Television saves lives. Storylines save lives. Sharing your stories and creating more awareness will save lives."

"I’ll always be eternally grateful to the power of telly and in particular good old Corrie. Also the incredible treatment by our NHS and the team at Marie Curie who supported her from day one."

Kris's post moved his Instagram followers, including fellow former Emmerdale co-star (and fiancé) Max Parker.

"Such a strong woman you are", Max responded, tagging Kris' mother Lydia in his comment.

Sally's health ordeal in the Manchester-based program began in November 2009 and ITV aired emotional scenes of the machinist breaking the news to her husband Kevin (Michael Le Vell).

But fiction caught up with reality as actress Sally Dynevor had really been diagnosed with cancer off-screen during the heart-breaking storyline.

The Dancing on Ice star couldn't believe her work was mirroring her real life and spoke to press about her initial shock.

"I was shaking. I just couldn’t believe that this had happened. Surely that’s Sally Webster not Sally Dynevor", she recalled.

Much like Kris Mochrie's mother Lydia, the soap legend admitted she was encouraged by her on-screen alter ego to get checked out – which also saved her life.

"It just didn’t seem ­possible. I’d known for six months that Sally Webster was going to get breast cancer."

"I was quite excited about it ­because it was an ­amazing story", she added.

"Little did I know that was ­going to turn into something I wished I’d never said. I wasn’t really expecting the diagnosis at all."

"I thought I’d kind of made it up in my head because of the storyline."

Thankfully, and much like her Corrie character, Sally recovered from the illness.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
