The Crown’s new star Ed McVey looks just like young Prince William as he’s spotted on set for the first time filming series six

The Crown’s new star Ed McVey looked the spitting image of young Prince William as he was spotted on set for the first time in central London.

The theatre actor, 21, looked dapper in a black blazer, a blue shirt and beige trousers as he filmed scenes for series six of the hit Netflix show. 

He appeared in high spirits as he left the set in a car holding a bag and flowers after his first day of filming.

In addition to Ed, Rufus Kampa, 16, will also play the Prince at a different stage in his life, depicting his teenage years showing how he and the royal family coped with the death of Princess Diana.

Ed will star alongside Meg Bellamy who has been cast as his onscreen wife Kate Middleton.

Ed and Meg will play the couple during the period in which their romance blossomed while studying at St Andrews University.

While Meg has no official acting credits to her name, both Ed and Rufus have significantly more experience.

Ed, who will take on the Prince in the early 2000s with scenes showing how he fell for fellow Art History student Kate, graduated Drama Centre London in 2021.

He was an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried, which was shown at London’s Old Vic.

Sharing his elation at landing the huge role, Ed penned on Instagram on Friday: ‘Ahhhhh the big news is now out!!! I’m absolutely buzzing to be given the opportunity to play Prince William in #TheCrown in Series 6!!! Along side the amazing @megkbellamy. Gunna be an amazing shoot can’t wait to learn all I can! The appearances of Meg, Ed and Rufus will follow on from the season five cast, with a number of known names and newer faces taking on the roles of various members of the Royal Family.

The final two series of The Crown will cover the Royal Family’s history throughout the 1990s and into 2003, however it is not yet known which moments will be seen.

In July, it was reported that a shift in the ending of The Crown has led to rumours of a follow-up that leaves open the possibility of a sequel based on Charles, William and Harry and could even feature Megxit.

Showrunner Peter Morgan, 59, has been urged by Netflix bosses to take the Royal Family ‘s story further – and now, the creator’s have altered the ending of series 6, The Sun reports.

Season 5 of the Netflix hit aired on November 9, while season 6 was set to be the final instalment of the Windsors’ story, airing next year.

Series 6 was originally supposed to conclude in 2002, it being the year the Queen lost her sister Princess Margaret as well as her mother – but 2005 is now set to be the new end date.

And this will be with the wedding of Charles and Camilla, ‘marking the start of an era’.

This shifting of the final year could allow space for a sequel in the story that could delve into Prince Charles and his sons Princes William and Harry.

Key historical moments involving the Royal Family between 1999 and 2003

1999: The marriage of the Queen’s son Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex: The wedding took place at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. 

2000: The Queen celebrates the Millennium: Millennium celebrations take place throughout the UK. The Millennium Dome in London is officially opened by HM The Queen on January 1.    

2001: Queen Elizabeth reacts to 9/11 terrorist attacks: A week after the tragedy she sent a message to the British ambassador to Washington, Sir Christopher Meyer to offer her condolences. 

She wrote: ‘Each and every one of us has been shocked and numbed by what we have witnessed in these recent days. 

‘At your service today, we think especially of the British victims. These are dark and harrowing times for families and friends of those who are missing or who suffered in the attack – many of you here today. 

‘My thoughts and my prayers are with you all now and in the difficult days ahead’. 

On September 13 The Queen ordered the Changing of the Guard ceremony to be paused for a two minute silence, followed by the playing of the American national anthem. 

2002: The Queen’s Golden Jubilee: The Queen celebrated the milestone on February 6 and it was an international event to mark the 50th anniversary of her ascension to the throne. 

On June 4, an estimated one million people headed to central London to line The Mall on the last day of the official celebrations.

Queen guitarist Brian May played ‘God Save The Queen’ from the roof of Buckingham Palace in her honour. 

2002: The Queen dines at 10 Downing Street with the five living former Prime Ministers who served under her. She met with Tony Blair, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan and Edward Heath.

2002: The death of Princess Margaret: The Queen’s younger sister dies after suffering a stroke aged 71. The pair had had a troubled relationship after The Queen said she couldn’t marry her love Peter Townsend. 

2002: The Queen Mother dies: She passed away aged 101 at Royal Lodge Windsor.
