Joe Sugg reflects on response when he was announced for Strictly

Joe Sugg, 31, has spoken about how the “stars realigned” after he was partnered up with his current girlfriend Dianne Buswell, 33. The former YouTuber was paired with the professional dancer in September 2018.

The two spent 16 weeks working together to get to the final of the BBC series.

Joe said at the the time, they saw the “best and worst” of each other while competing in the intense show.

Unfortunately for the couple, they eventually came runners-up to Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton.

They did not go public with their relationship until after the show ended.

“I may not have won the glitter ball, but I’ve won something a million times more special,” Joe wrote in a sweet Instagram announcement at the time.

Speaking on The Diary of a CEO Podcast with Steven Bartlett, Joe discussed the “luck” the duo had on being partnered up for Strictly.

Steven asked whether Joe thought he would have dated Dianne if they didn’t dance together on Strictly. 

“We have the same conversation, we’re like, how lucky it was we were even partnered together,” Joe said on the podcast.

“If we weren’t even partners on the show but were on the same show, we still say we may not have got together.

“Because when you’re actually with your partners, you don’t see each other throughout the week. So we sort of see it as like the stars sort of realigned there.”

He went on to discuss how the months spent training together solidified their feelings for each other, as they accepted one another despite witnessing the “best and worst” sides of their personalities.

“We saw the best and the worst of each other over that sort of 16-week period,” he added.

In August 2019, the couple decided to move their relationship to the next level and move in together.

Joe even went to Australia to meet professional dancer Dianne’s parents in December 2019.

It was the first time Joe had spent Christmas without his own family.

In early 2021, Dianne was asked about future plans and whether she wanted to tie the knot with Joe.

“I’m quite an unorganised person actually, Joe and I don’t really talk about that kind of thing [marriage],” she said.

“We’re both so relaxed so we just play it by ear. We really enjoy each other’s company so much and whatever happens, happens.”

Dianne is currently competing in Strictly 2022 with Kiss FM DJ Tyler West.

The pair have been impressing viewers and the judges, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke, Shirley Ballas, and Craig Revel Horwood, week after week with their energetic routines.
