It was the perfect weekend for Michael van Gerwen as he thrashed arch-rival Peter Wright before fending off a battling Nathan Aspinall to win the World Grand Prix.

None of his rivals could get near the Green Machine during the tournament at Leicester’s Morningside Arena. In fact, he had more trouble signing a dartboard, as demonstrated by footage that has emerged on social media.

Van Gerwen was ecstatic to beat Wright in the semi-finals on Saturday after the pair had exchanged barbs via the media during the week. Both players had claimed they were the man to beat, but MVG had the final say – for now at least – with a 4-0 destruction of the reigning world champion.

As he celebrated with the crowd after the match, Van Gerwen volleyed a water bottle into the crowd, to the delight of the partying fans. Then, as is customary, he was handed the match board to sign.

He walked across the stage as he was writing his signature, only to trip over the step up the oche and crash to the ground, leaving Sky Sports darts pundit Wayne Mardle looking shocked.

Van Gerwen initially looked shaken but after being helped to his feet, the three-time world champion managed to crack a smile and finished off signing the board.

And he was smiling again after the final on Sunday as he defied a spirited comeback from Aspinall to win his sixth World Grand Prix title 5-3.

"For me to have this trophy back feels amazing," said Van Gerwen. "It's great to have this tournament back in my hands but I had to battle for it really hard.

"When a guy like Nathan puts his relaxed mode on he can play some phenomenal darts but I'm glad I won this one. It was a tough one.

"I wasn't panicking at all – I think I did all the damage early doors. I think this was great for darts – I was 4-0 up and Nathan never gave up, he kept battling."
