On Thursday night, Kate Garraway was joined by opera singer Charlotte Church, who opened up to the ITV host about her rise to stardom as a child as well as the breakdown of her relationship with her mum. However, things took a slight turn in the interview when Charlotte made an admission about not letting her children have a mobile phone.

The singer, who rose to fame when she was just 11-years-old, has been in the limelight ever since.

The singer’s relationship with rugby star Gavin Henson also caused a frenzy when they first got together.

However, the couple, who share two children together, ended up splitting up in 2010.

Their daughter Ruby, 14, was born in September 2007, with their son Dexter, 13, following in January 2009.

Charlotte is now married to Jonathan Powell, and in August 2020 they welcomed their first daughter, Frida.

During her chat with Kate, Charlotte admitted to the host she can be quite strict when it comes to her kids.

She explained she doesn’t like her eldest children to have mobile phones and hopes to keep it that way for as long as possible.

“I am quite stuck in the mud about my kids having a phone,” Charlotte began.

“Ahhh,” Kate said in surprise as Charlotte continued: “They’re like, ‘come on, we’re teenagers now and everybody has got a phone’.

“But that is something I am pretty immovable on.”

Kate went on to ask the singer how old her children were.

“She’s 14, when are you going to let her have a phone?” Kate asked. “Are you hoping to get to 21 without having a phone?”

The mum-of-three explained: “I can’t say too much on telly because then she will hold me to it.

“I am going to hold out for as long as reasonable.”

Taking a swipe at Charlotte’s parenting style, the host said: “That is quite controlling.”

“It’s not controlling,” she replied before Kate interrupted: “It is controlling, Charlotte!”

The Crazy Chick hitmaker hit back and defended her decision as she said her children have a phone at their dad’s and she doesn’t want them to become addicted to technology.

Elsewhere, Charlotte recalled the moment she gave birth to her daughter in their bathroom at home.

“The labour started to get really intense and I do have neighbours,” she remembered.

“I started to make quite a lot of noise, it’s like I am screaming in the garden in the rain.

“I thought maybe we should take it inside. I ended up having her in a not so idyllic setting but absolutely screaming my lungs out on the bathroom floor.

“It wasn’t quite the birth I’d planned but very rarely do they go like we plan, but it was still sacred and amazing.”

“I’d prefer to be indoors with drugs,” Kate went on to joke.

Kate Garraway’s Life Stories airs on Thursday’s at 9pm on ITV.
