A GRANDAD who had both legs amputated after developing diabetes has had two prosthetics made – to match his Dalmatian dogs.

Gordon Sanderson wanted to blend in with his beloved spotty pooches, Poppy and Harvey.

The 60-year-old from Newcastle, suffers from Type 1 Diabetes and vascular disease.

In 2006, doctors were forced to amputate his left leg just below the knee. Surgeons then removed his right leg four years later.

But Gordon loves walking his two dogs and was determined to stay fit and healthy, so last year he ordered a pair of prosthetics to match their black and white coats.

Gordon says: “I was due to get new legs, and I knew that I could have them made with a pattern on, so I wanted one that would fit in with the dogs.

“I love Dalmatians, and our two dogs are lovely mannered and really well behaved. They are great dogs, so I wanted to look the same as them.

“People always do a double take when they see my legs. Sometimes they call out ‘nice legs’ to me as I go past."

Gordon was diagnosed with diabetes at 17 then suffered circulation problems.

In 2006, doctors amputated his left leg just below the knee. They removed his right leg in 2010.

Gordon was fitted with NHS prosthetic legs, but they were extremely uncomfortable for him. So he opted to buy his own Dalmatian legs at the end of last year.

He enjoys rock climbing, scuba diving and canoeing with partner Linda, 61, who he met online ten years ago.

Gordon said: “Linda and I love doing outdoor sports together. She met me when I had prosthetic legs, but it has never held us back and we love doing all these sports together.

“Children love them aswell. They love it if I’m walking the dogs – and I’ve got a dog either side of me, and then my two prosthetic legs in the middle.

“I walk miles each day with them and I’m proud of my spotted legs.”
