NATIONAL icon Betty White is trending on Twitter and the social media universe exploded with fear that the iconic actress is gone.
Betty White crept into the hearts of people everywhere and as the last living cast member of Golden Girls, fans' opinions are unanimous, she needs to stay for good.
Why is Betty White trending on Twitter?
Betty White turns an impressive 100 years old on January 17, 2022, and fans are euphoric she is still with us.
Twitter exploded today with posts about her career and achievements over the last 76 years in acknowledgment of her 100th birthday, but many did not appreciate the lack of warning.
As Betty White has gotten older, fans expressed their repeated concern every time her name started trending. This time is no different.
Fans responded to the posts on Twitter saying they need a warning when the 99-year-old actress's name was listed under trending.
“Betty White should be blocked from trending,” one person tweeted while another said, “Can we all petition Twitter to automatically put a ‘she's okay’ caption whenever Betty White suddenly starts trending? Please?”
Twitter did eventually respond with a caption under Betty White’s name that says, “Don’t panic, our beloved Betty White is okay! People are just chatting about her life and career as an actor.”
What makes Betty White iconic?
In many ways, Betty White revolutionized the film industry as one of the first women to become prominent in front of and behind the camera.
It was the 1950s when White hosted her own talk show titled, The Betty White Show. As her show gained in popularity, White hired Arthur Duncan as a dancer on her show.
Duncan, who is black, was on the show when it went national and southern states started complaining about his inclusion in the show.
When White was approached about limiting his appearances on the show, she said, “I’m sorry. Live with it,” and gave Duncan even more airtime on her show.
Despite The Betty White Show being popular, it was canceled shortly after.
She was reunited with Duncan in 2017 who talked about the difficulties of breaking into television and said White gave him his first on-air job.
“I was on the show, and they had some letters out of Mississippi and elsewhere that some of the stations would not carry the show if I was permitted to stay on there,” Duncan told Steve Harvey on his show Little Big Shots: Forever Young.
“Well, Betty wrote back and said, ‘Needless to say, we used Arthur Duncan every opportunity we could.'”
Over the course of a very long career, Betty White received 16 Primetime Emmy nominations and won five Primetime Emmy Awards.
She was the first female to receive an outstanding game show host Award in 1983 for her role on the daytime show, Just Men.
She is also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 and won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2012 for her role in the tv series Hot in Cleveland.
What is Betty White’s secret to a long life?
“Don't take yourself too seriously,” she said in an interview with People before her 99th birthday. “You can lie to others — not that I would — but you cannot lie to yourself.”
She stressed the importance of never taking yourself too seriously and finding humor and joy in everyday life.
To have a long and fulfilling life, White said it's imperative to keep busy, exercise your mind, stay positive, and avoid complaining.
“Accentuate the positive, not the negative,” she said. “It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, ‘Hey, that was great!’ It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look."
