PATRICE EVRA believes Juventus did not understand Cristiano Ronaldo and failed to treat him with the respect he deserves.

Ronaldo, 36, decided to leave Juventus in the summer to return to his beloved Manchester United.

And Evra believes Old Trafford is a better fit for the star, as he knows he is loved in Manchester.

Evra, a close friend of CR7 from their time together at United, argues Ronaldo was made a scapegoat towards the end of his time in Turin – that may have encouraged him to make the summer switch.

He told La Repubblica: "Cristiano needs love and respect.

"Instead, at Juve he was becoming the scapegoat. The criticisms in Italy of Ronaldo have been ridiculous and a bit hypocritical.

"Another mistake was when Allegri said at the conference: "Cristiano will not play all the games".

"There is no need to say certain things in public.

"In any case, Cristiano's only true love is Manchester United. Because nobody in Manchester would dare to criticize him.

"Juve should have understood that Cristiano demands love and respect. When he receives them, Cristiano gives his life for you."

The love shown to Ronaldo upon his return to United was immediate and although he has scored key goals in important matches, things have not gone to plan so far.

The Portuguese has voiced his concern with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tactics and has been criticised by some sections of the media for his poor work rate.

And though Ronaldo has scored six goals in nine games since his transfer, Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli does not regret letting him leave.

He said: "Having the greatest player in the world was an honour and a pleasure.

"We can only applaud him for what he did, but Juve comes before anyone."
