A new season of the hit Netflix show You is upon us, and as such, it’s time to try to remember all the batsh*t things that took place in the last season. Our favorite murderous couple has officially relocated from L.A. and have a baby on the way, so there’s lots to look forward to. But before we follow Joe as he inevitably murders a bunch more people, we have to remember how we got here. This only-the-essentials recap for You season 2 will help you.
[There are obviously spoilers for You season 2 in this post. That’s the whole point! If you haven’t watched yet, hop on out of here.]
Joe is in L.A. now.
And he’s going by a different name. Instead of just changing his name like a normal person, he captures the guy who is responsible for creating his new identity and just becomes him. His name is Will Bettelheim, and Joe kidnaps him and puts him in the famous glass box. So yes, Joe might have a new name, but he is definitely the same exact person.
Joe meets Love Quinn, who is… a very complicated person.
Love’s parents own the grocery store where Joe, aka Will, is working now that he’s in Los Angeles. She’s a young widow who is a really excellent baker, so she really fits Joe’s whole “I love damaged girls” thing. She also has a twin brother, Forty, who really struggles with substance abuse issues. Their relationship is super co-dependent, which ends up being a big pain in Joe’s ass.
Candace proves to be a very big issue in Joe’s life.
The ex-girlfriend who was supposed to be dead is very much not dead, and she follows Joe to L.A. to terrorize his life. How does she do that? By dating Forty, Love’s brother. (She’s calling herself Amy.) She tries to tell Love that Joe is actually a serial killer, but Love sides with Joe when Joe tells her Candace is just his “crazy” ex.
There’s a whole storyline with Joe’s neighbors??
Delilah and Ellie, the sisters who live next door to Joe, have a whole storyline that doesn’t contribute much to the overall narrative of the second season except that it allowed for some major revelations about Love, and upped the body count left in Joe’s wake.
Turns out Love is also a murder!
Yeah! The big twist at the end of the season is that Love is also a murderer! She takes out Delilah and Candace, and when Joe finds out about it, he tries to kill her himself, but she tells him she’s pregnant with his baby, so he doesn’t. This sh*t is messy, guys.
The kill count for the season is…
Joe: 2, the guy who came after Will Bettelheim for $50,000 and Henderson the comedian
Love: 2, Delilah and Candace
We also find out that Joe killed his dad when he was younger because he’d suffered years of abuse, and Love killed her au pair when she was a teen. So while those two murders didn’t happen during this season, they were revealed.
How it ends:
Joe and Love end up moving to a house in suburban California, where they plan to start their family. But in the final moments of the season, we see Joe staring at the woman next door, so obviously there’s more murderous behavior where that came from.
