VIEWERS of ITV's Manhunt begged for the crime drama to return for a third season after tonight's final episode.

Manhunt II: The Night Stalker – which has left some viewers scared to sleep – told the grisly tale of the UK's Night Staker, Delroy Grant.

The four-part drama ended tonight and told the real-life story of the pursuit of a notorious burglar and rapist in South East London.

The Night Stalker's crimes took place over a 17-year period – he was eventually captured thanks to DCI Colin Sutton, played by actor Martin Clunes.

Grant carried out a string of burglary and sexual assault offences between October 1992 and May 2008.

He preyed on elderly women who lived alone, often attacking them in their beds at night.

Grant is thought to have assaulted more than 203 women, the youngest in her late 60s and the eldest aged 93.

In 2011, he was convicted of five counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault and 11 counts of burglary and is serving a 27 year sentence at an undisclosed location.

'Hooked' viewers 'couldn't breathe' as they watched the tense night of 15 November 2009, when police officers covertly monitored the area of Croydon following attempted break-ins and found Grant walking back to his car after trying to enter an elderly woman’s home.

As fans watched Grant's arrest and the final moments of the popular drama, they begged ITV for the show to return for a third series.

"Martin Clunes is absolutely fantastic in this. I wish there could be more series of #manhunt the whole team is brilliant and hats off to the real officers who worked so hard to catch the #nightstalker," wrote one fan on Twitter.

Another added: "I thought the first series was good but this second series has been a brilliant."

And a third commented: "ITV'S #manhunt #nightstalker was gripping. Such a sensitive unsensational true crime thriller and exploration of how society treats the elderly. Martin Clunes was subtle, understated & captivating too. Another series please!"

ITV's Manhunt has covered different true crimes and the first series in 2019 told the real-life story of how the murder of French National, Amelie Delagrange, on Twickenham Green in August 2004.

Her killing was eventually linked to the murders of Marsha McDonnell in 2003 and the abduction and murder of Milly Dowler as she travelled home from school in 2002.

Will there be a Manhunt season 3?

Although there hasn't been official confirmation from ITV, the real life DCI Colin Sutton has said there are talks to bring back the hit show for a third series.

The first two seasons were written by Ed Whitmore, with Sutton's input.

As mentioned they are based on his notes from past criminal cases he worked on.

Speaking to press, Sutton said: "I wasn't sure if we should come back and do another one after we did the first one.

"But Ed and I are thinking about it and we're talking about maybe doing a third. I have to say it's a possibility!"

The former detective is now retired and living in Suffolk after successfully leading 30 murder investigations for three different police forces over the course of his career, but acted as a consultant on both series. 

"I think there might be," he said, when asked if there were more cases from his history that could make for good TV.
