Filming on the first season of Netflix’s upcoming fantasy series The Witcher ended last month. With the television fantasy landscape looking a little empty now that HBO’s hit Game of Thrones is over (at least until those many prequels and spinoffs start airing), there’s a high chance audiences will flock to The Witcher, with its fictitious medieval setting and supernatural elements, to curb their cravings. Here’s what we know about the series so far.
Release Date:
While no official release date has been announced by Netflix, The Witcher is expected to start streaming in Autumn 2019.
Cast:
Movie star Henry Cavill (Justice League, Mission: Impossible — Fallout) is making the move to streaming as series lead Geralt of Rivia. The rest of the cast includes a number of relative newcomers, including Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, Mimi Ndiweni, Millie Brady and Therica Wilson-Read. Other recurring cast members include MyAnna Buring, whose previous genre work includes The Descent and the Twilight movies, Jodhi May (Gentleman Jack) and Adam Levy.
Trailer:
Netflix dropped a short teaser trailer last year, showing fans their first brief glimpse of Cavill in character as Geralt, complete with trademark silver hair that many fans will recognize from the video games.

Plot:
The Witcher is an adaptation of a series of novels and short story collections by Polish author Andrzej Zapkowski, which have also been made into several popular video games. Set in an alternate medieval realm, it follows Geralt of Rivia (Cavill), a travelling monster hunter, or “witcher,” who was trained from a young age to do battle with all manner of monsters. During his training he was imbued with special physical and mental abilities which help him in his quest. With such a wealth of source material at hand, it is unclear which of the Geralt stories will make it into season one of The Witcher, although the inclusion of Princess Ciri and Queen Calanthe in the cast seem to suggest that it will follow the plot of the first book in the main saga, Blood of Elves.
