BBC were forced to apologise to viewers after they missed BMX star Kye Whyte’s silver medal win to show a boxing repeat instead.

Bethany Shriever led a brilliant double medal haul for Team GB on the BMX track this morning.

The 22-year-old blitzed the field in the Tokyo final with a brilliant ride and added a gold to Whyte's silver from just moments before in the men's race.

However, the East Londoner's family and friends plus plenty of other viewers were left raging when they were unable to watch Whyte’s ride live.

And it got even worse as Whyte raced out to celebrate with Shriever after her win with commentators revealing the result of his race before it had even been shown on repeat.

Twitter soon exploded, with one person writing: “Have to say though, BBC really messed up with the coverage of Kye Whyte's medal performance.

“It was not on live. They put on the boxing instead on BBC One, then on the red button where BMX was supposed to be, the athletics women's heats of 100m was on instead! Shambles…”

As another wrote: “Well that was a bit of s*** coverage of BMX by the Beeb. Go straight from a boxing bout yes to live Shriever victory, but in doing so spoilt the men's, which they hadn't shown yet.

“Whyte had won silver we were told as he lifted Shriever up. We bloody didn't know that!!”

After realising the error of showing Caroline Dubois's victory over Rashida Ellis from two hours’ earlier instead of Whyte, Beeb presenter JJ Chalmers apologised to viewers.

Before Whyte’s race was eventually shown around 5am – half an hour or so after it had happened – he said: “We've given the game away. We are very sorry that we didn't get to show Kye Whyte's race live on BBC1.

“It was on the red button, but there's been a bit of a timing issue. There have been some delays in the schedule as well.

“We know he gets a silver, but here's how he did it.”
