Sonia Fowler’s (Natalie Cassidy) is about to be turned upside down when her father Terry Cant – a charasmatic charmer and ladies man – turns up in EastEnders wanting to build a relationship.

Known as Rocjy, he wants to build bridges with Sonia but is it too little too late?

Actor Brian Conley mused to Metro.co.uk: ‘He hasn’t been there for 35 years – when I found out Natalie Cassidy was my daughter I thought oh, wow , that is proper. It’s a big thing! He wants to find Sonia, we need to find out why. That’s all I can really say.

He’s cheeky, his name’s Rocky – my wife and kids just roared. I am now used to it. When you’re in your dressing rooms, I didn’t have a name plaque for a while – it’s screwed in, not blu tack so I’m here for a while. The episodes are good – I hope he will be funny, they cleverly open up things when he tells his stories.’

So how will Sonia react?

Brian continued: ‘It’s very moving – he’s been away, she is hurt and annoyed and he’s also upset not to have been there. He has to gradually convince her through telling stories from her childhoods – anything can say most of it, but there are certain things she clicks that no-one else could know that.

‘In one, he says something, she says ‘Oh my God’. I asked about the trumpet – everyone goes on about it when she’s out – where’s your trumpet, Sonia! I think I will get ‘All right Rocky, eye of the tiger!’’

Speaking about his experience so far, he added: ‘He’s dipped into everyone’s lives because he holds court, he is charismatic. He is helped in certain situations – Linda Henry, I was really intimidated by!

‘The character is really tough. She’s the nicest person there – she is so lovely, so warm and so caring. Everyone knows what it’s like for me there, so they’re accommodating, they don’t mind helping me out. The turnaround is really quick – which for me, is exciting.

‘When you get there, it’s like joining a speeding train – I’m on, can I keep up!? Getting the scripts in the right order, there is a lot of work and prep at home. It has got easier over time.’
