Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special aired on CBS on March 7. During the interview, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, were interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. The two discussed their experience in the British royal family, and at one point Oprah compared their experience to Netflix’s series The Crown. Harry and Meghan admitted they have watched the Netflix show.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle watched ‘The Crown’
During Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special, Meghan and Harry described the hardships they faced as working royals. After they married in 2018, they embarked on a tour to Australia, Tonga, New Zealand, and Fiji.
After the tour, Harry told Oprah he noticed a shift in how his family treated Meghan. He attributed this change to Meghan’s natural charisma bringing back insecurities about his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
“But it really changed after the Australia tour, after our South Pacific tour,” he said. “… it was also the first time that the family got to see how incredible she is at the job. And that brought back memories.”
Oprah mentioned The Crown and asked Harry and Meghan if they watched the Netflix drama.
“I’ve watched some of it,” Harry said. “You’ve watched some of it?”
Meghan replied, “I’ve watched some of it.”
Oprah compared Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s story to the TV show
Season 4 of The Crown premiered on Netflix in 2020. Josh O’Connor played Charles, Prince of Wales, and Emma Corrin portrayed Diana. The season shows Charles and Diana’s tour in Australia as a turning point in their marriage. In the series’ depiction of events, Diana was beloved by the public leading to Charles feeling insecure.
“I think it was the fourth season, actually, where there is an Australian tour. So, is that what you’re talking about? It brought back memories of that? The Australian tour,” Oprah asked. “Where your father and your mother went there, and your mother was bedazzling. So, are you saying that there were hints of jealousy?”
Harry answered, “Look, I just wish that we would all learn from the past… I mean, here you have one of the greatest assets to the Commonwealth that the family could have ever wished for.”
Prince Harry does not mind ‘The Crown’
Since it premiered in 2016, The Crown has proved controversial for its depiction of some historical events. In an episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden, Harry revealed he does not have an issue with the show.
“They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fictional,” he told Corden. “But it’s loosely based on the truth… it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, what the pressures of putting duty and service above everything else, what can come from that.”
Harry added, “I’m way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing the stories written about my family or my wife or myself. Because it’s the difference between — that is obviously fiction, take it how you will, but this is being reported as fact because you’re supposedly news. I have a real issue with that.”
